Processed Foods and Cosmetic & Food Additives

Processed Foods are foods that are put through a process to kill harmful bacteria that may form in the food. These processes are supposed to be helpful to the products, but they can also add harmful substances.

When a natural food is processed it may be crushed, heated and have chemicals added to it that may kill all the nutritional value of the food. Then often additives are added to the product to put back some vitamins and nutrients that were lost when the food product was processed.

More than a billion pounds of chemicals are added to processed foods each year. Chemicals additives are added to processed foods to preserve them, color them, add flavor to them, add anti-caking chemicals and so much more.

Preservative are added to keep foods fresh and to keep them from spoiling. The first preservatives to be used were vinegar, salt and sugar. Now many of the preservatives are man-made chemicals.

Many of the synthetic food and cosmetic additives are considered to be safe, but some of them were at first though to be safe and were later found to be carcinogenic and toxic.

In general all synthetic chemical additives and preservatives should be avoided, as many of them have not been properly tested. It happens fairly often that a synthetic chemical additive that has been judged to be safe and has been used for year is later found to be toxic and in some cases causes children and adult to die.

All of the chemical food coloring can be potentially harmful, so it is best to avoid all food coloring made from synthetic chemicals.

Organic foods are not supposed to contain any of these potentially harmful additive and chemicals.

Because a product is stated to be a natural product this does not mean that it does not contain any potentially dangerous synthetic chemical ingredients. It can often mean that it contains some natural products, but also may contain some synthetic chemical ingredients, so you should check the labels.

Most people think that the FDA states that you have to list all the ingredients of a product. But in truth you just have to list the main ingredients and do not have to list the ingredients that are in really small quantities. As they feel to list these ingredient would be ludicrous.

An emulsifier is a substance that holds together two ingredients that do not normally mix well together. The main uses of additives in foods are:

1. Keep foods fresh so they do not spoil (Extend shelf life)
2. Keep food free of disease.
3. Enable food to be more availed during the off-season.
4. Increase or maintain the nutritional value.
5. Make food taste a certain way.
6. Make food look more attractive.
7. Facilitate the preparation of the food.
8. Give food a particular texture.
9. Make food a particular color.
10. Enhance the flavor.
11. Sweeten food.
12. Make food taste better.

Food also picks up chemicals when it is farmed from pesticides, fertilizers and in the case of animal products chemicals to help the animals grow larger and medicines given to animals. One interesting point is that in many cases organic farmers use organic pesticides when they grow food, which in many cases can be just as dangerous as non-organic pesticides.

Natural versus Chemical Additives
Just because an additive is natural it does not mercenarily mean a food is safer. It has been found that several of the artificial red dyes are harmful to health, so a solution that natural producer use is to use Cochineal or Carmine which is made from crushing red color beatles.

Many of us distrust the safety of many food additives, but it is considered by the government that their benefits can often protect against health risk that may appear naturally in food.

6. Preservatives (such as sulphites & nitrites)
7. Food dyes (usually derived from coal tar):

There are more than 4,000 food additives. If a person mainly eats processed food they may eat more than 100 of them in one day.
