Refined sugar has all the minerals removed so it just supplies plenty of empty calories but does not supply the body with any vitamin or mineral needs. It just supplies the body with a quick burst of energy. Foods that contain natural sugars such as grains, fruits and honey are easily metabolized by the body. People in the United State seventy years ago consumed each year 16 pounds of refined white sugar. Now the average person consumes 125 pounds of sugar. An 800% increase.

Some healthy substitutes for refined sugar are fruit sugars, molasses, stevia from the Amazon Rainforest, unrefined maple syrup, date sugar and raw unrefined honey.

A bad effect of sugar is that it leaches calcium from the body which wrecks the proper needed balance between calcium and phosphorus. Too much white sugar contributes to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which is caused mainly by consuming a diet that contain a high amount of refined carbohydrates.

Refined sugars cause the release of insulin from the pancreas which tells the liver to convert blood sugar to glycogen to be stored. The glucose from refined sugar is quickly used by the body and then the liver may not be able to convert the glycogen quick enough to restore the sugar level of normal blood. Symptoms of a person with low blood sugar can be headaches, tiredness, nervousness, asthma and fainting.

Often when people eat too much sugar they fill themselves up with its empty calories and therefore they do not eat nutritious foods. This is a major reason to have children avoid it.

Both refined sugar and alcohol have some of the same principles in common. They both can be addictive and can cause the same metabolic process. They both deplete the body of vitamins and minerals.

An important thing to under stand is it is actually worst to substitute artificial sweeteners. Such as saccharin and aspartame for sugar. Cyclamate after testing was performed the FDA banned it. Saccharin is a sugar substitute that has been known to cause caner but when the FDA tried to ban it there were objections from the manufacturer and diabetics. Sugar is not a natural substance but it is still better than artificial synthetic sweeteners.
