Rajgir, 90km southwest
of Patna, was the capital of the Magadha Empire until
it was moved to Patna in the 5th century BC. Rajgir is important because
the Buddha stayed here, and it is also popular because of the Hot
Springs located here.
Buddha
spent twelve years at this place. He used to preach at Griddhakuta
Hill (Hill of Vultures), where he delivered many important
sermons during the three months of the rainy season. Buddha converted
King Bimbisara of Magadha on this hill. There are rock-cut steps leading
up to two natural caves where the Buddha is said to have preached.
The modern Peace
Pagoda built by Japanese and is gotten to by using a chairlift located
3 km fro the the twon center. (Rs 20, 8:30 am to 1 pm & 2-5pm)
About 3km away,
the First Buddhist Council was held at Saptaparni
Cave on Vaibhara Hill, about six months after
Buddha’s death. At that time, about five hundred monks met and
put down in writing the Buddha’s teachings. On the way to Saptaparni
Cave, you pass the Pippala Watch Tower, which is 7m
high.
There is the interesting
Vishwa Shanti Stupa Temple, on top of Ratnagiri Hill,
which was constructed by the Japanese. It has four golden statues of
Buddha that represent his birth, enlightenment, teachings, and death.
Open daily 9 am to 5 pm. It is reached by a chairlift (Rs 10).
At Venuvana,
the Bamboo Grove, Buddha stayed for awhile. He bathed in Karanda Tank,
which is now a small zoo. Near Venuvana are some Hindu and Jain
temples. Venuvana is the site of a monastery
built by King Bimbisara for the Buddha.
Rajgir is also
sacred to the Jains because Mahavir
studied and meditated here. The twentieth tirthankara was also born
here. There are Jain temples on many of the hilltops in the area.
Rajgir was once
the capital of the kingdom of Magadha. It is said that at Jarasandha-ka-Akhada,
Bhima fought with Jarasandha for twenty-eight
days before he killed him by tearing his legs apart.
The 5th century
Ajatasatru Fort and the 40km wall that used to encircle the ancient
city here are now in ruins.
Next to the hot springs is the pink Lakshmi-Narayana Temple.
As the places here are rather spaced out here most likely you would
want to rent a tonga or taxi for a half-day to see the sites.
Practicalities
There are several basic Jain dharamshalas near the station.
Hotel Anand, (255030), by the bus stand, has rooms
upstairs for Rs 200/300 and dismal rooms downstairs for Rs 150/250.
It has a basic vegetarian Jain restaurant (no garlic, onions or eggs).
Bihar Tourism’s has three hotelsAjatshatru
(255027), near the hot springs,) has dorn bed for Rs 65. Gautam
(255273) has large double rooms with TV for 500 and Rs 750
with A/C. Rooms have a balcony. Tathagat Vihar (255176)
has rooms for Rs 550 and Rs 750 with A/C. Dorm beds are Rs 65.
Bihar Tourism Hotel Rajgir (255266) has decent rooms
with bath for Rs 225/350. It has a good garden. Hot water in a bucket
for Rs 5. Has a nice garden.
Hotel Siddharth (255616, 255216; fax 255352) near the
hot springs south of town, has rooms for Rs 350/550. Has good food..
Kolkata (Calcutta) Buddhist Society Rest House has
clean spacious rooms for Rs 250.
The Burmese Temple has rooms with a common bath for
Rs 125/150 and dorm beds.
The Bengali Buddhist Society Temple, next to the Burmese
Temple, may allow tourists to stay in a clean room for a donation
Triptee’s Hotel has good rooms with balconies
for Rs 500.
The five-star Cemtaur Indo Hokke Hotel (255231, 255245;
Email; centaur@sancharnet.in; fax 5231) is located 1 km from the bus
station. Rooms are $90/110 to $200. The restaurant serves good Indian
and Japanese food. Japanese-designed place with both Japanese and Western
style rooms. Communal bathhouse. Meals are $40 a day
Travel
Rajgir is 15km from Nalanda. There are shared jeeps to Nalanda (Rs 10).
The closest railway station on a broad-gauge line is in Gaya (92km),
which is on the Delhi-Kolkata line. The nearest airport is located in
Patna (90km). There are regular buses to Gaya (3 hr) and Patna (3 hr).
