Sasan
Gir National Park (Lion Sanctuary)
Sasan Gir, 60km from Junagadh, is the only place on
earth where the Asiatic lion still lives in the wild. The park has around
250 lions in an area of 1400 sq km and a core area of 260 sq km. The
Asiatic lion used to live from northwest India to Arabia. Outside of
India they have been extinct since the 1940s. In 1913 there were only
eighteen lions in the park.
The sanctuary also has panthers, wild boars, foxes,
deer, nilgais, chinkatas, chitals, hyenas, chowsinghas, barking deer,
monkeys, and peacocks. It is sometimes possible to see a lion on safari,
but they are not so easy to find. You are more likely to see a lion
by taking a jeep and not a minibus; the jeeps can travel on the smaller
trails and enter deeper into the jungle. The morning safaris are usually
better than the afternoon ones.
There is a crocodile center where young crocodiles
are cared for and then released into the wild.
Information
The park is closed from June 16 to October 15. The best time to visit
is January to May. The morning safaris are usually better for seeing
wildlife than the afternoon ones. There are three main routes taken
in the park, the longest around 30km. There is an Orientation Centre
in Sinh Sadan Lodge Complex and a film about the lions is shown there
at 7 pm.
To enter the park, visitors require a permit from the Sinh Sadan Forest
Lodge. Jeeps enter the park between 7 to 11 am and 3pm to 5 pm.There
are some watchtowers in the park from which wildlife can be viewed.
Admission (for a permit) Rs 30 for Indian and $5 for foreigners. A
camera is $5 for foreigners and Rs 50 for Indians. A video camera is
Rs 2500 for Indians and just $200 for foreigners. Plus a $10 vehicle
fee for four hours and a mandatory guide for $10 (for a group) for foreingers
and Rs 50 for Indian.. If you don't have a jeep you have to hire one
for Rs 400 for three hours (hold up to six).
It is much better to take a jeep instead of the mini-bus because the
minibus stays on the main tracks while the jeeps can go down the small
tracks where you are more likely to actually see a lion.
The Interpretation Zone can be reached by local bus from Sasan Gir.
Interpretation Zone
In the Interpretation Zone, Devaliya, 12km from Sasan
Gir, there are lions in a 4 sq km fenced off area, which basically gaurantees
a sighting of the lions.. These lions can be seen easily.
It is open 7:30 am to 11 am & 3 pm to 5 pm. and cost $5 to enter
for foreigners and Rs 30 for Indians. Jeeps are Rs 100/Rs 500 and guides
are Rs50/Rs 500. Closed on Wednesday.
You can driven around in a minibus to view the lions here (departs
10 am & 3 pm).
Crocodile Rearing
Centre
At the Crocodile Rearing Centre, near
Sinh Sadan Lodge, crocodile eggs are hatched so that baby crocodiles
can be reared in a controlled situation. Once they reach a certain size,
they are released into the wild.
Where to Stay and
Eat
As there are only
a few hotels here, it is best to book in advance.
Toran Holiday Home (Gujarat Tourism), Tulsishyam, has
rooms. Checkout time 9 am.
Forest Dept. Rest House has cottages with bath. They
should be booked at a tourist office in Mumbai, Delhi, or Ahmedabad.
Mainland Jungle Lodge has comfortable cottages. Reserve
with North West Safari (079 656-0962).
Sinh Sadan Forest Lodge (02877 285540), not far from
the railway station, has comfortable rooms with bath & A/C Rs 1400
with A/C for Indian and $60 for foreigners (making is a very bad value).
Non A/C rooms with bath are Rs 800 for Indians and $40 for foreingers.
Dorm beds are also available for Rs 50/$5, and there is a good thali
restaurant (open only to guests). They show a film about the park at
7 pm. Prices here are 4 or 5 times more for foreigners than Indians.
This prices is a nice place to stay but rediciously over-priced for
foreigners.
Gir Lion Safari Lodge (02877 285521; fax 285528), near
the river, is a Taj Group hotel, which has comfortable rooms for Rs
3000/4000 and Rs 6500 for an A/C suite. It has a restaurant. Reserve
in advance at a Taj Group hotel. Romms have balconies with views of
the woods. Peaceful locations.
Travel
The closest airport is in Keshod (85km).
There are trains to Veraval (2 hr, two daily), Junagadh (2½,
one daily), and Delwada (for Diu) (one daily). The train from Junagadh
departs early in the morning and arrive in Sasan Gar at around 9 am
and the same train returns to Junagadh departing around 5:30 pm. It
is usaully faster and more convient to take a bus.
There are buses to Junagadh (2½ hr, 60km), Una and Veraval (1
hr, 45km).
