Neti Pots

A Neti Pot is a small pot shaped like a tea pot with a small spout that is inserted into the nose to clean the nostrils and the nasal passage. Using a Neti Pot to clear the sinuses and nasal passages is an important daily activity that should be performed just like a person brushes their teeth daily. It is particular useful for helping to prevent colds and flues, hay fever and allergies, sinusitis and other direct nasal infections. It also has benefit for the entire respiratory system. A Neti Pot is useful to use even if a person does not normally have nasal problems as the nose filters the air that you breathe and as often the modern air is so polluted and dirty often some of these pollutants can get stuck in the nose and it is good to clear these pollutants out daily.

Neti is a Sanskrit word that means to guide and it symbolizes that it helps to guide water through the nasal passages to open up the life-force energies. Neti Pots have been used for thousands of years in India by Yogis to help facilitate deep breathing and it Neti Pots are widely used in Ayurveda, the ancient herbal medicine system of India, to ensure good health. Also now the use of Neti Pots is being widely used by natural practitioners. It benefits and how to use it was demonstrated on the Oprah Winfrey show in April of 2007.

It is a simple process that takes less than ten minutes where you first make a mixture of about a cup of water and a 1/4 teaspoon of salt and then pour about 4 oz into each nostril. Most Neti Pots hold about a cup (8 oz or one-fourth of a litre) of water and have a spout which is small at the end for easy pouring

Using a Neti Pot is extremely useful for the internal cleansing processes of the body. It is an excellent natural health process which has no side effects for most people who use them. According to Ayurveda the use of a Neti Pot is helpful to ensure good overall health, to help the immune system function properly and to prevent diseases.

Neti Pots sold in the United States and Canada are usually made of ceramic and the traditional ones used in India for centuries are usually made of metals such as steel or copper. Also some neti pots are made of plastic that are usually used when traveling as they do not break. The shape tends to vary a bit and some can hold one cup of water and some two cups or more. The two most popular Neti Pots sold in America are Neti Pots made by the Himalaya Institute which is the one that was used in the demonstration on the Oprah Winfrey show and the other popular one is the Lotus Brand Neti Pot.

Neti Pots are use to clean the mucous out of the nose to clear the nostrils so a person can breath properly. It can be used instead of decongestant drugs which often have very negative side effects. Its use is important for the immune system and general good health to cleanse the body of impurities and pathogens that are clogging up the body systems.

As the nose is constantly in use and there is no way in many cases to filter out or choose the air we breathe often many toxins and irritants can get stuck in the nasal passages. A Neti Pot is used to filters the dust, pollens and other harmful materials that stuck in the nasal passage. In the big cities often smog totally makes the air we breathe terrible and unhealthy. Chemicals we breathe in bleaches, artificial air fresheners, cleaning products and many other products can often cause problems with the nasal passages. Often the air inside buildings is recycled and stagnant and just plain unhealthy. Often air in houses and offices has pollutants in them. Also air conditioners and heating system adjust the air quality and blow the contaminated air around the room. The air being breathed is often too cold, too hot, too damp or too dry for the nose to be able to handle properly. Good clean air from a fresh source is often our best friend.

Many people have respiratory and breathing problems to deal with and most of us have experienced that clearing the nasal passages is one of the best ways that we can deal with these ailments. Often respiratory problems can lead to general body weakness and fatigue and sometimes to severe illnesses and mental problems such as depression.

Often when the nasal passages are clogged it is difficult to perform everyday activities. Often people just accept these breathing problems as an unfortunate circumstance of life and they do nothing to help alleviate these problems. Often the regular use of a Neti Pot can clear many of these problems and lead to a generally happier way of life. Clearing the sinuses with a Neti Pot helps clear the mind. It is important for athletes to have clean sinuses so they will have clear breathing which adds energy to the body.

When we clean the colon and digestive system it is also important to clean the sinuses.

How a Neti Pot Works

First the water is poured into the upper nostril and flows into one of the nostrils to just above the bridge of the nose then backwards into the middle cavity. The water then flows into the other nostril and out of the lower nostril. The water passes the frontal and mid-nasal sinuses.

When the water is basically the same temperature as the blood (98 degrees) and has about the same salinity as the blood there should basically be very little sensation.

The water loosens and dissolves buildup within the nasal passage and moves it out of the nose. But also because of gravity and a venturi effect it also causes a vacuum pressure and also drains the sinus passages. Whereas it would normally be difficult to drain a passage such of the sinuses that is a "dead end" passage, that by using a Neti Pot it is done in an easy and efficient way. Often if a person has running sinuses they can feel sinus pressure relief in seconds.

The Eustachian tubes, which is also a "dead end" passage, also has dirt drawn out of it by the flow of the water using a Neti Pot. Therefore it can help with middle ear infections by relieving the pressure that has built up by draining the tubes and also getting rid of germs.

Because of the effect of osmosis and capillary action the blood vessels in the nose are also cleansed.

The tear ducts of the eyes which are connected to the eyes also have dirt and other substances drawn from its passages which can often make the eyes work better

If your nostrils are severely clogged and you have regular breathing problem it is a good idea to use the Neti Pot for a week to see if it can actually give you the full benefit that it is capable of doing.
