Ghata At this place Krishna and Balarama revealed Their forms of Maha-Vishnu and Ananta Sesa to Akrura, when Akrura was taking Them from Vrindavana to Mathura. Krishna also showed the residents of Vrindavana the Vaikuntha planets here. The Yamuna used to flow by this place, but has moved about one kilometre (half a mile) away. There is a temple here with Deities of Krishna and Balarama with Akrura standing in the middle. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu stayed here when He visited Vrindavana. If one bathes here on a full moon day, especially Kartika Purnima, one will be liberated from this material world. By taking bath here one attains the result of bathing in all the holy places. If one takes bath here during a solar eclipse one gets the result of doing a rajasuya or asvamedha yajna. These results are stated in the Saura and Adi Varaha Puranas. In the Adi Varaha Purana it is stated that Akrura Ghata is the king of all holy places. “Simply by taking bath in the Yamuna, anyone can diminish the reaction of his sinful activities. Both Krishna and Balarama took Their baths in the river and washed Their faces. After drinking the transparent crystal-clear water of the Yamuna. They took Their seats again on the chariot. The chariot was standing underneath the shade of big trees, and both brothers sat down there. Akrura then took Their permission to also take bath in the Yamuna. While standing in the river, Akrura suddenly saw both Balarama and Krishna within the water. He was surprised to see Them there because he was confident that They were sitting on the chariot. Confused, he immediately came out of the water and went to see where the boys were and he was very surprised to see that They were sitting on the chariot as before. When he saw Them on the chariot, he began to wonder whether he saw Them in the water. He therefore went back to the river. This time he saw not only Balarama and Krishna there, but also many of the demigods and all the Siddhas, Caranas, and Gandharvas. They were all standing before the Lord, who was lying down. He also saw Sesa Naga with thousands of hoods. Lord Sesa Naga was covered with bluish garments, and His necks were all white. The white necks of Sesa Naga appeared exactly like snowcapped mountains. On the curved lap of Sesa Naga, Akrura saw Krishna sitting very soberly, with four hands. His eyes were like the reddish petals of the lotus flower. In other words, after returning, Akrura saw Balarama turned into Sesa Naga and Krishna turned into Maha-Vishnu. (Krishna Book, 38)) How To Get Here This place can be visited on the way to Mathura. It is located halfway between Mathura and Vrindavana, about a kilometre off the main road. If you are coming from Vrindavana, about 1/3 km (¼ mile) past the Pagal Baba temple (the large marble temple on your right) there is a dirt road. If you see a yellow building on your right you went past this road. You make a left down this bumpy sandy road for about one kilometre (.6 mile) and this place is on your right, in the middle of a field. There is a temple here. Temple Timings Darshan is from 6 to 11 am and 4 to 6 pm at the temple here. If you know of information that is not listed here, or if you would like to help update our listings, please e-mail us at:
