Garuda Govinda Temple

The Deity in this temple is Krishna in His Vishnu form, with twelve arms, being carried by Garuda. This Deity is said to have been installed by Vajranabha. Once Krishna climbed on the back of Sridama, who had taken the form of Garuda, and rode on him in the form of Narayana. It is also said that Garuda came to Braja to see Krishna, at which time Krishna climbed onto his back. There is a good chance that if you ask the pujari, he may raise the dress of the Deity and show you the form of Krishna on the back of Garuda. Outside of the temple, to the left is a beautiful murti of Garuda. This is a well-known temple in the Vrindavana area.

A special festival day in this temple is Akshaya Tritiya. This festival takes place in the month of Vaishaka (April-May). On this day the 12-handed Deity of Govinda is seen mounted on the His bird carrier, Garuda.

“Garuda appears to belong to the Kinnara planet. The inhabitants of the Kinnara planet have the same features as Garuda. Their bodily features are like those of a human being, but they have wings. These inhabitants of Kinnaraloka are very expert in singing the glories of the Lord. As they fly their wings vibrate the hymns of the Vedas.” (Srimad Bhagavatam 4.30.6 purport)

How To Get Here This temple is a little outside of Vrindavana in Chatikara. To get here you take the road from the ISKCON temple towards the Delhi-Agra road for 5 km. When you reach the Delhi-Agra road, you turn right going towards Delhi. You then turn right at the road after the petrol (gas) station, after about half a km. This temple is then about half a km down the road, all by itself. It is convenient to visit this temple on the way to Radha Kunda or Varsana.
