The
search engines and directories websites seem to change at a fairly
hectic pace. Many of the major search engine (worth hundreds of
millions of dollars) three years ago do not exist any more. Some
of the search engines that I saw listed as recommended major search
engine on other site, when I typed in their web address I was directed
to a page where they were selling the web sites URL name for $600.
I
would say that the main search engine to be listed in is Google,
because you can be listed for free and also because many of the
major directories and news site use them to search the Web. From
my experience 80% of the people coming to my site come from search
engines and over 85% of the people coming from the search engines
are coming from Google and Yahoo. The point is that Google and Yahoo
are worth more than all the other search engines and directories
put together.
The
other major search engines are MSN, AOL and AskJeeves. Microsoft
just redid their search engine technology in their attempt to give
the best search results on the Internet. So far in my experience
Google still gives the best results, enough that I open Google as
my Browser Home Page.
Two
years ago several of the major search engines were charging for
most sites (sometimes not for non-profits) to submit a site URL
to be accessed by their crawlers to look for new site. As Google
never charged many more useful, but non-profitable site submitted
to them, but none of the other popular search engines because it
cost too much. Both because of the excellent search results and
also because many more site were submitted to them Google became
the most popular search engine on the Internet
Now
it seems with the tremendous success of Google that most of the
search engines are no longer charging to submit site URLs to them.
But many of the important directory sites are still charging something
to submit a site to their directory. Yahoo! charges $299 to submit
a commercial site, but they allow non-profit site to submit for
free.
Also
in the past websites could pay to be put on the top of a search
result for keywords on certain search engines, with no indication
that the site paid to get there. Google started a pay-per-click
program where website that bid the highest are placed at the top
or on the left side top of a search result page. But because it
clearly says Sponsored Link you can tell which site paid to be on
top.
How
to Submit Site to Search Engines
Before submitting a site to the search engine you would want to
have a description for the site and a list of keywords in case these
are requested and they often are. It is a good idea to make up both
a long and short description of your site, as some search engines
have a restriction on how many pages can be add to their description
field. You should also have a long and short list of keywords for
the same reason.
Our
list below gives an idea of steps to be taken to submit a site to
many of the more popular search engines. The search engines listed
below account for about 99% of the searches made in the USA. Most
likely over 95% of the search come from just 10 websites which are:
Google, Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, Netscape, AskJeeves, AltaVista, Lycos,
Excite and Alltheweb. So most of your work of submitting to sites
can be done just by submitting to these ten sites and also submitting
your website to the Open Directory.
Most
of the search engines want you to just submit the main page of the
web site and then their spider will find the links to the other
page and then index those pages too, eventually indexing all the
pages on the web site.
When
you submit a site to a search engine it should usually be in the
form: http://www.yourwebsite.com
Re-Indexing
Site
Many of the search engines re-index the web sites regularly. In
this way the search engines update new pages on the web site and
check for changes in the older pages.
Registering
with Search Engines
When you register with a search engine you let the search engine
know you exist and at what location so their spiders can find your
site. Some of the search engines visit you immediately to check
if you web address is real. It may take a week or more before search
engines will begin to index your site and may months to fully index
your entire site.
